Transitional books tend to be for readers ages five to nine and like early reader literature, the storyline in transitional books is supported by illustrations. However, the illustrations are less prominent, the vocabulary more complex and the pages contain more text. These books help transition early readers into longer, more difficult storylines, hence the name transitional. Familiar experiences still remain a motif in the stories in order to attract the reader’s interest and create an association between the reader and the story.
