Amy Anne Ollinger is a book-loving fourth grader whose favorite title is E.L. Konigsburg’s The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.  When a classmate’s mother uses her influence to have it and other popular titles banned from the school library, Amy Anne and two friends decide to start a secret banned books library run out of their lockers.  When the principal discovers its existence, Amy Anne is suspended and the school librarian is fired.  Amy Anne finds herself in the middle of a controversy over who should decide what books the library should contain, an issue that she and an unlikely ally can’t walk away from.  A thought provoking choice for readers 9+ that explores the concepts of censorship and free speech in a real-life situation students can relate to.
