Lester loves two things – science and being homeschooled by his mom. The two have been especially close since the mission-related death of his astronaut father five years ago. When Mom announces that she has taken a full-time job and Lester will begin attending public school, he finds that his behavior challenges, the manifestations of autism, make life at school challenging to say the least. The noise in the cafeteria, last minute schedule changes, and the destruction of a Superman figurine from his father that he relies on for comfort seem overwhelming. Two kind-hearted classmates and the annual science fair, an opportunity to delve into his love of space (a topic he is forbidden to discuss at home) may be the keys to his adjustment, however. Perfect for fans of Fish in a Tree and Wonder.
